We've got a long actually quite well but we disagreed on things.

Tillerson, who was confirmed by a 56-43 vote in the Senate a year ago, was removed after months of reported mutual dislike between the two men, with Tillerson also reportedly calling the president a "moron" in private.

Trump announced he was firing Tillerson in a tweet on Tuesday and said he would nominate CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace him.

On Tuesday morning, the top question wasn't why President Trump chose to fire his secretary of state, but why he made a decision to do it when he did.

"Gina Haspel, the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will be nominated to replace Director Pompeo and she will be the CIA's first-ever female director, a historic milestone".

When Trump first tapped the Exxon Mobil CEO for secretary in December 2016, Pelosi issued a press release attacking the choice, slamming him as "an oil executive friendly with Vladimir Putin". He also noted some disagreements with Tillerson, who has had a rocky relationship with the Trump White House. Trump cited the Iran nuclear deal in particular: "I think it's awful, he thinks it's okay". "I wanted to break it or do something, and he felt a little bit differently".

Mike Pompeo went further than many members of his own party in blaming Hillary Clinton, who was then secretary of state, and President Barack Obama's administration for the deaths of four Americans.

Given that Pompeo has also suggested military strikes would be more effective than diplomacy when it comes to Iran, NIAC said there are "serious questions about his fitness to serve as America's top diplomat".

TRT World spoke to Leone Lakhani for more details. White House officials, though, said chief of staff John Kelly had called Tillerson on Friday and again on Saturday to warn him that Trump was about to take imminent action if he did not resign and that a replacement had already been identified. He added: "Really, it was a different mind-set, a different thinking".

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill were caught off guard by the firing, with many questioning its timing. Tillerson continued to insist his relationship with the president was solid and brushed off rumors of strain between them. Later that evening, Trump said he would meet Kim by May to discuss the future of North Korea's nuclear weapons program. White House officials disputed that notion, and promptly fired Goldstein.

"I will leave how these discussions proceed to the president of the United States", Pompeo said, making no mention of Tillerson. Tillerson left Africa on Monday.

July 26, 2017 - Tillerson tells reporters he's "not going anywhere" amid reports of tensions with the White House over policy decisions.

Tillerson's ouster bodes ill for those in Trump's administration who were not a part of his campaign team, business life or family.
