The 36-year-old marvel continues to defy the ageing process as he needed just 58 minutes to overpower the Serb with a brilliant display of Swiss timing. Pete Sampras' Grand Slam record of 14 titles stood for seven years before it was eclipsed by the current ATP men's singles world number one. "I think really I was able to mix up my game nicely, make it hard for him there", the ATP website quoted Federer, as saying.

"It's been a long time since I have been interrupted at night and have to come back the next day", Federer said. "I felt I was too close to winning".

After handing back an early break to allow Krajinovic to draw level at two-all, Federer moved into cruise control.

These two have played four times and Federer has won three of those matches. Daniel plays next Argentinean tennis player Leonardo Mayer.

"I was grateful to be out on the court after surgery that quickly but at the same time just didn't feel good at all".

"At the Masters 1000s, when the format was different, it was the best-of-five-set finals in the finals".

There were no such problems for Kevin Anderson or Tomas Berdych, who were straight-sets winners over Evgeny Donskoy and Max Marterer respectively, while Dominic Thiem saw off Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2 3-6 6-3.

Borna Coric of Croatia upset 13th seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-1 6-3 and Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-1 7-5.
