The forecast for the weekend looks set to set Donegal aglow with welcome sunshine lighting up St Patrick's Day parades across the county.

St. Patrick's weekend will be very cold. St Patrick's Day on Saturday will see freezing temperatures but there will be some sunshine in the afternoon.

The warning came as Met Éireann issued a Status Yellow alert for heavy rainfall predicted over the next 24 hours.

"Saturday night will be very cold and frosty, with scattered snow showers in the eastern half of the country, but mainly dry elsewhere".

According to Met Eireann, rain will gradually clear northeastwards tonight to scattered showers and some clear spells in the southwest and west by morning. Breezy, with moderate to fresh easterly winds.

The whole country is set to experience "very cold" weather, with the north and east getting the worst of it - with temperatures of 1 to 2 degrees max.

The cold weather continues on Sunday with the possibility of snow showers in the east and temperatures falling at night to minus-four.

Wrap up warm when you're going to the parades on Saturday!

The Beast from the East might have absconded with Storm Emma but it appears that more inclement weather is just around the corner.
