"BJ is a proven performer at Test level for us and brings a lot to the group both on and off the field", said Larsen.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will miss the services of Mitchell Santner in the upcoming IPL season, as the New Zealand all-rounder has been ruled out of action for about nine months, due to a bone defect in his knee, requiring surgery.

"We've monitored BJ's progress over the past few months and it's great to see him back with the gloves for Northern Districts".

Black Caps coach Mike Hesson said it was tough news for Santner.

Middle-order batsman Ross Taylor has been included after missing the ODI decider - which England won to clinch a 3-2 series victory - with a quadriceps injury, while wicketkeeper BJ Watling returns after a hip problem sidelined him for the two Tests against West Indies at the back end of previous year.

The first Test will be played between 22nd and 26th March.

The first match, the first day-night Test to be played in New Zealand, starts in Auckland on Thursday next week.

"Having another spin bowling allrounder in Todd is of real benefit for us and he'll be looking forward to his opportunity", said Gavin Larsen, the chief selector.

Astle's only two tests were against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2012, and Pakistan in Christchurch in November 2016.

Test specialists Jeet Raval, Watling and Neil Wagner return to the fold as New Zealand eye their first test since their 240-run win over West Indies in Hamilton in mid-December. "They have match winners throughout their squad so we expect a challenging series".

Todd Astle, in the absence of Santner, is the only spinner in the 12-man squad while batsman Ross Taylor has recovered from a thigh injury to be included.
