New York Giants Sign Former Panthers Running Back

Free-agent running back Jonathan Stewart has signed with the New York Giants, the team announced Tuesday night.

Carolina selected Stewart with the No. 13 overall pick in 2008 out of OR, and he became the Panthers' all-time rushing leader with 7,318 rushing yards in his career.

Between the Panthers and Giants, this represents the second contract that general manager Dave Gettleman has given out to Stewart in his career. "He is a quality runner with power and speed and brings a veteran, professional presence to our locker room".

He did have six rushing touchdowns, but his yards per carry average was the lowest of his career. He and DeAngelo Williams each broke the 1,000-yard rushing barrier in 2009, and the Panthers haven't done it since - the longest active drought by a team in the National Football League, according to ESPN Stats & Information. He also caught eight passes for 46 yards. But Stewart is an aging player who hasn't been productive in a few years. He also finished with 1,295 receiving yards and 58 total touchdowns during his tenure.

After he was released by the Panthers on February 28, Stewart initially drew interest from the Seahawks and Lions, but the Giants will end up with his services in 2018.

Vintage Stewart showed up that week as he rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns.

The Giants were 26th in rushing offense last season (96.8 yards per game), when Orleans Darkwa and Wayne Gallman carried the brunt of the workload.

The signing shouldn't sway your opinion on the potential for the Giants to snag Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick. Stewart has 18 100-yard games, and that was the only one against the Giants.
