NO chefs, restaurants advance in James Beard awards competition

On Wednesday morning, the James Beard Foundation announced the final nominees for the 2018 James Beard Awards, considered by some to be the Oscars of the food industry. He has been nominated for the award four times in the past.

Nominees were announced in almost 60 categories of the Foundation's various awards programs, including Restaurant and Chef, Restaurant Design, Who's Who of Food and Beverage in America, and Media. Yang has never been nominated in this category, and she is the only Minnesota chef nominated in a national Beard Foundation category.

Yin first made her mark in the Philadelphia dining scene more than 20 years ago with the opening of Fork, a pivotal addition serving as the framework for much of Philadelphia's popular restaurants today. It is the third straight year Miles has been a James Beard finalist. Brown was nominated as Best Chef: Midwest in 2017, Kaysen and Kim are newcomers to the list of finalists.

Zahav is nominated for Outstanding Service, though this is far from the restaurant's first James Beard recognition. The category is open to chefs in Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Florida and Puerto Rico. Both were finalists for this award past year.

Out of the 20 MA semifinalists announced in February, six advanced to the finals. Christensen is the only new name in the category; Link and Hamilton were finalists previous year.

Bacchanal is a finalist for Outstanding Wine Program and Cure is a finalist for Outstanding Bar Program.

The Times-Picayune restaurant critic Brett Anderson is nominated in the media categories for his investigation of sexual harassment at the Besh Restaurant Group. Winners will be announced May 7.
