Meanwhile, Federer progressed to Round of 32 of the ongoing ATP Masters event in California. He was leading the 67th ranked Federico Delbonis 6-3, 2-2 when play was suspended. It's what tennis players do.

And consider Federer won the Australian Open past year after taken six months off the tour!

Nadal is now out with a recurrence of his hip injury, Djokovic is struggling after elbow problems and Murray is recovering from major surgery in January. He lost to Chung Hyeon in the Australian Open fourth round in January before undergoing the surgery.

The Serb made a decision to go for another surgical procedure in an attempt to fully heal from the injury. Federer, who earned his fifth title at Indian Wells previous year, saved a set point in the second-set tiebreaker and advanced to face Filip Krajinovic yesterday.

'You can't really look ahead to semi-finals, finals and speculate about who you could play, ' Federer said. "Very weird", Djokovic said.

It was a routine day for Federer, who saw off his Serbian opponent 6-2 6-1 on Stadium 1.

This was the former US Open champion's sixth win in a row.

The South Korean sensation continued his impressive season by upstaging Czech 12th seed Berdych 6-4 6-4. The German star produced 14 aces, but conceding two breaks in the final set was what brought about his downfall. "I have been sick for over a week and tried everything I could to get better".

Federer will face 25th-seed Filip Krajinovic in the third round.

Yuki Bhambri of India pulled off a surprise when he toppled ninth-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-4 6-4.

Djokovic was beaten 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-1 by qualifier Taro Daniel in one of the tournament's big shocks on Sunday, having been out of action since the Australian Open due to surgery on an elbow problem.

American Taylor Fritz outlasted Fernando Verdasco of Spain 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (1).

The win sets up a third-round showdown with Spaniard David Ferrer, who defeated Tennys Sandgren of the U.S. 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

From Day 1 through to the Finals.
