Releasing Jordy Nelson not an easy decision for Brian Gutekunst

The Green Bay Packers pulled off a stunner of a move Tuesday with the release of Jordy Nelson.

Gutekunst also said he talked to Aaron Rodgers after the deal was done, but did not mention whether or not Nelson was offered a paycut to stay on the team. No teammate exemplified what it means to be a packer quite like him.

Nelson will be 33 years old when next season starts and he's coming off a down year, by all standards. Definitely a sad day and the toughest part of this business. In the post, Rodgers said "there will never be another quite like white lightning".

Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst held a news conference Tuesday night.

Nelson was beloved by Packers fans for sharing the spotlight with his family. Certainly, it seemed to have caught Aaron Rodgers by surprise.

The Packers released Nelson, the former Kansas State star who grew up in Riley, Kan.

In the early afternoon on Tuesday, it was reported that the Packers landed tight end Jimmy Graham, who is one of two tight ends in National Football League history to catch 10 touchdowns and surpass 1,000 yards in two seasons (the other is THE GRONK!). "But I think Jordy is a very good player".

Gutekunst does not anticipate a reunion between the Packers and Nelson, as of right now.

In Cobb, the Packers stuck with a younger player who will turn 28 during training camp.

Nelson, 32, a second-round selection in the 2008 draft, forged a close bond with Rodgers over the past decade in Green Bay.

Nelson finished with just 53 catches for 482 yards and six touchdowns a year ago, but that's due in large part to the fact that Aaron Rodgers suffered a broken collarbone in Week 6 and missed most of the season thereafter. But let's remember that Rodgers only played seven games. According to ESPN Wisconsin, Nelson would have seen his $9.25 million base salary in 2018 drop to roughly $1.1 million if he had been willing to take the Packers' deal, so it's not surprising that he shot them down.
