The flowers celebration includes picnics under the cherry trees with food and drinks, shared with friends and family-this is a tradition known as hanami, which translates to "watching blossoms", and can be traced back hundreds of years.

Tickets for the National Cherry Blossom Festival Opening Ceremony are already sold out.

Two weeks after the peak of the cherry blossom's bloom, the petals begin to fall.

"While the mathematical models still show the blossom reaching peak on March 18, this week's cooler than forecast temperatures have necessitated moving the projection to the last week of March", the NPS wrote in a Facebook post Monday.

The National Park Service first announced their projected peak bloom dates for the blossoms on D.C.'s famous Yoshino cherry trees at the Newseum on March 1. Subway Nanboku Line, Komagome Station; 300 yen; 03-3941-2222.

Spring is just around the corner, which means the cherry blossoms at the University of Washington's Quad are nearly in full bloom.

The Cherry Blossom Parade will take place April 14.

The Richmond Cherry Blossom Festival is set amongst 255 Akebono cherry blossom trees at Garry Point Park, on the mouth of the Fraser River.
