He previously directed Live Free or Die Hard, the PG-13 Die Hard movie that had John McClane launching a vehicle at a helicopter and taking down a fighter jet, and now he wants to do an origin story for Bruce Willis' iconic cop.

Chad and Carey Hayes, the writers behind The Conjuring and the House of Wax remake are rewriting the screenplay for Die Hard 6, the film now in production with Len Wiseman coming back to both produce and direct.

No story details have been confirmed, but word on the street says the film looks set to be an origin story where we see a younger actor portray McClane as a regular cop in 1970s NY.

The heavily debated Christmas franchise which consists of five films had its first outing in 1988 with Die Hard, based on the 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp.

Although not much is known on the plot of the film, it has been dubbed a "part-prequel, part-sequel" and will see Willis reprising his role as the wisecracking police detective John McClane.

Last month, Willis revealed that the film is still going ahead and the script had been written. But it has now emerged that the Hayes brothers are working on a rewrite. Starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, it is the story about Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren who help a family which has been terrorised by a dark presence in their farmhouse.
