Two first-time Congress MLAs were suspended for three years and another for a year after a BJP member was allegedly hit by a microphone in violence that broke out in the Gujarat assembly on Wednesday. The BJP, however, denied any such occurrence. "The CCTV footage will prove everything", said deputy chief minister Nitin Patel.

After the ugly scenes in the House, Speaker Rajendra Trivedi suspended Congress legislators Amrish Der and Pratp Dudhat for three years while another Opposition party member Baldevji Thakor was suspended for one year. Another MLA Baldevji Thakor, who allegedly punched his BJP rivals in the assembly lobby, has been suspended for a year.

Senior Congress legislator Vikram Madam tried to raise a question and participate in the issue but was repeatedly shouted down by the members from treasury benches. "The Congress MLA not only insulted the Speaker but also became violent in the House", Patel told reporters. Madam, however, insisted that he would speak.

The Speaker then objected to his tone, following which Maadam and Der rushed to the well of the house in protest. Following this, MLAs from both the parties started abusing each other and many of them exchanged blows in the House.

According to reports, Dudhat, who represents Savarkundla seat, used his belt targeting Nikol MLA Panchal.

BJP has registered an official complaint with the Assembly Speaker seeking disciplinary action against the Congress MLA for the assault.

"This is a very unfortunate incident".

Heated arguments ensued between the BJP and the Congress MLAs. Following this, Congress legislators Ambrish Der and Virji Thumar rushed to the well and raised objection with the Speaker. "Today, I tried to bring it up by raising a point of order". "I wanted to suspend the errant legislators for five years but the ruling party appears to be soft and has sought only three years' suspension", Trivedi said. "I am sad about my behaviour in the House but not ashamed of what happened in the context of what was said about my mother", he said.

The session, which began on February 28 and will run till March 31, has been acrimonious at large. The speaker revoked the suspension in the second half of the day after the Congress' chief whip tendered an apology.
