News that a 13-year-old boy in MI succumbed to complications from a sinus infection that spread to his brain have rattled the internet.

"It was surreal. He was in a lot of pain, he was crying that his head hurt, and he was still talking to us", Marquel's aunt, Nicole Alexander, told People.

The eighth-grader went to an urgent care in Flint, Michigan when he started to notice cold symptoms. "If you or your child is diagnosed with a sinus infection, your healthcare professional can decide if antibiotics are needed".

However, the headaches that Marquel was experiencing worsened into migraines. Gilbert said the teen visited multiple emergency rooms with no resolution. Here, Brumley was once again sent home, this time with some pain medication for his headaches.

The brain imaging revealed that not only did the boy have a sinus infection but also that it traveled through his bone and had spread into his brain's blood vessels.

The family has raised more than $14,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for medical and funeral costs.

Brumley remained in a coma in "critical condition" at the hospital.

"They are going to run three tests on him.to determine if he is still with us or not, if he passes even one then he is still with us, if he fails all of them, than legally he is gone", Gilbert posted on Facebook on March 8. Days after the operation, Brumley died. Unfortunately for Marquel and the Brumley family, the teenager was a victim of the rare form of sinus infection.

"I think it is very important to express how serious a sinus infection can be, not to take them lightly or to blow them off", Alexander added.

The 13-year-old was a straight A student, a football player and a amusing guy.

"He was a football player, played the trumpet in the band, you couldn't find flaws with the kid", Alexander said.

"The love and support everyone has shown is overwhelming and so appreciated". According to the fundraising page, the family "is taking comfort in know he saved 7 lives with the gift of his organs".
