The Boeing 737 MAX 7, the smallest member of the MAX family completed its first flight on Friday, the start of flight testing, with certification and delivery expected during 2019.

The shortest and third member of the Boeing 737 Max family took off from Boeing Field.

"Everything we saw during today's flight shows that the MAX 7 is performing exactly as designed", Keith Leverkuhn, vice president and general manager of the 737 MAX program at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said in a statement. While overall sales of the MAX now exceed 4,300, the diminutive 737-7 is believed to have attracted less than 100 orders, lagging behind its siblings as operators continue to "up-gauge" to larger aircraft. A shrunken version of the MAX 8, it's less fuel efficient on a per-seat basis.

Southwest Airlines and Westjet of Canada placed the bulk of the orders, around 55, with smaller orders from Jetlines of Canada, Ruili of China, one unidentified airline and Air Lease Corp.

Boeing lists it for sale at $96 million, although market pricing data from aircraft valuation firm Avitas pegs the real price tag after standard discounts at around $41 million.

The plane jetted into blue skies from Renton Field in Renton, Washington, at 10:17 a.m. PT, and landed three hours and five minutes later at Seattle's Boeing Field.
