North East can be new engine for India's growth, says Modi

In his inaugural speech, Modi spoke about "scientific social responsibility" through science and technology.

After inaugurating the event, he would lay the foundation stone of the National Sports University, a thousand Anganwadi centres and 19 residential complexes for teachers, doctors and nurses, an official statement said in New Delhi.

Nagaland Governor Padmanabha Acharya will inaugurate the Children Science Congress on March 17 while his West Bengal counterpart Keshari Nath Tripathi will inaugurate the Women Science Congress the next day.

Asserting that India's stature in the world had grown under his government, Modi said that the number of heads of state and government visiting India in the last four years had doubled and the country had also become a member of several worldwide groups which it had been aspiring to join such as the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) and the Australia Group.

Modi pointed out that this was the second Science Congress in the northeastern region in the last 100 years.

Further stressing on the issue, the Prime Minister said that the Government has set a target of 100 GW of installed solar power by 2022. Efficiency of solar modules now available in the market is around 17%-18%. "Let us aim for India to be among the top 10 countries in the Global Innovation Index by 2030", he added. "These groupings are providing a thrust to R&D for clean energy".
