So what makes Auckland 12 places better than New Zealand's capital?

Seoul fell three places from 176 to 179, with Mercer citing political instability, while Tokyo fell from 47 to 50. Other key cities include Bangkok (132), Manila (137) and Jakarta (142).

In the latest Mercer survey, Singapore has emerged on the top for providing the highest quality of living in Asia for expatriates.

Taipei ranks No. 84, followed by Shanghai (103) and Beijing (119).

The survey is conducted annually with the aim of enabling companies to compensate employees fairly when placing them on global assignments.

In past years, those factors have included housing, climate, medical facilities, physical remoteness, infrastructure, crime, cultural and recreation facilities, and availability of goods and services.

Mercer claimed the "authoritative survey" is one of the world's most comprehensive.

Vienna is followed by Zurich (2), and Auckland and Munich in a joint 3 place. Dubai and Abu Dhabi top this ranking in MENA as well, also surpassing other cities around the world such as London, Paris and Los Angeles. "London - the highest ranked United Kingdom city - scores top marks in areas like access to public transport, and the variety and quality of theatres and restaurants, but has lower scores for air pollution and traffic congestion".

Despite economic volatility in Europe due to uncertainty around Brexit as well as increased political volatility in the region overall, many of its cities still offer the world's highest quality of living and continue to remain attractive destinations for expatriates on assignment, according to Mercer's 20th annual Quality of Living survey.

Yemen's capital Sanaa, devastated by conflict, ranked two places above Baghdad, and Syria's Damascus, seven years into a civil war, ranked six places above Iraq's capital.
