Yann Arnaud, a 38-year-old performer in Cirque Du Soleil's VOLTA, fell onto the stage after his hand slipped during a routine on the double rings.

Arnaud was taken to hospital after the fall, where he later died.

The company released a statement reading: "It is with vast sadness that Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group reports that a tragic accident occurred last night, March 17, during a performance of its show VOLTA, in Tampa, Florida".

President and CEO of Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, Daniel Lamarre, said: "The entire Cirque du Soleil family is in shock and devastated by this tragedy".

A Cirque du Soleil performer has plunged to his death. "We were very surprised, considering his experience, that something like that happened", said Lamarre, speaking from Tampa, where he had flown to be with the show's cast.

The Cirque du Soleil Volta show is scheduled to be in New Jersey later this month, but Monday truck drivers waited as the tent still stood in Tampa while the accident investigation is underway. Lamarre said he could not share further details about the incident involving Arnaud, a husband and father with two young children who was from France. Local media reports said Arnaud appeared to lose his grip on a strap before he fell, bringing the show to an immediate halt.
