BART is experiencing major delays at all San Francisco stations Tuesday morning, according to BART officials. The problem was related to the balloon that floated down and hit the rail, then exploded and caused smoke in the station, BART spokesman Jim Allison said.

About 100 passengers on the platforms and on trains between the stations were evacuated.

BART officials sent out an alert that trains were not stopping at the 24th St. station in both directions at around 5:30 am. A short time later, San Francisco Fire declared a working blaze at the station and crews responded.

Crews are conducting a track inspection.

San Francisco fire Lt. Jonathan Baxter said the fire might have been sparked by an accumulation of debris or garbage on a railroad tie, since it started "inside" the track.

Service will be limited from the East Bay to Montgomery Stations. Trains from the 24th Street Station in the Mission District (pictured here) to the San Francisco International Airport were halted for several hours, but service resumed just before 7 a.m.
