"This research initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to build a better understanding about mental health in our country". "Our research shows that only over a quarter of the respondents are willing to be supportive in many aspects, while the remaining are either judgmental or fearful of those affected with mental illness".

Bollywood's reigning queen, Deepika Padukone, who was diagnosed with depression a few years ago, has been very vocal about the stigma that surrounds mental illness in the country. On Friday, she deliberated on mental health illness at an event in Delhi.

While revealing the findings of the survey conducted by The Live Love Laugh Foundation (TLLLF) on public perception towards mental health in India, the actor said there is no distinction between mental and physical illness.

The survey which covered more than 3,500 respondents across eight cities noted that nearly half of the participants out of 3,556 used words such as "retard" or "crazy/mad/stupid" while describing people with mental illness.

The survey stated that 68% of people believe that people suffering from mental illness "should not be given any responsibility".

Also, 60% of the respondents believe that people suffering from mental illness "lack of self-discipline and willpower".
