They say the incident resulted in 17 inmates requiring outside medical attention and seven inmates were killed.

Prisons spokesman Jeff Taillon announced the deaths after state police helped secure Lee Correctional Institution in the early hours of this morning.

The fight started Sunday night at 7:15 p.m. ET and wasn't contained until 2:55 a.m. ET Monday morning, a prison spokesman added.

Lee County Fire/Rescue said ambulances from at least seven jurisdictions lined up outside the prison to tend to the wounded. The local coroner's office also responded.

At least six emergency agencies responded to a "mass casualty incident" that lasted more than seven hours and left seven inmates dead at a SC prison late Sunday, according to officials. One inmate killed another in February this year.
