In a rather surprising sequence of events, a 19-year-old medical student was arrested by Delhi Police for allegedly posing as an AIIMS doctor for the last five months.

In February this year, an institutional FIR was lodged by AIIMS after a fake doctor was noticed at the main surgical emergency pretending to be a faculty of the Trauma Centre Orthopedics Department.

Khurram, a native of Sitamarhi, Bihar, was attending to his sister being treated at AIIMS, but was apparently unsatisfied with the slow pace. He used his forged identity to make friends across departments and among medical students. Furthermore, he even participated in the events such as marathons and strikes, organized for doctors, according to the AIIMS resident doctor's associations.

Sources confirmed that there is also a medical diary issued in the name of Adnan Khurram. Owing to such a large number of doctors, it's also not possible to know everyone personally, he added.

Police said it is still not clear why Khurram posed as a doctor as he has been frequently changing his statements. In one of his reasons is that he had to help a family member get preferential treatment.

RDA president Harjit Singh said Khurram had been noticing his activities in the medical campus for the past many months and made a decision to keep a watch. During probe, it was found that Khurram had uploaded many photographs wearing a doctor's coat and stethoscope on social media. The police arrested Adnan Khurram on April 14. He would roam around the campus wearing the lab coat and stethoscope all the time.

But all his claims fell flat after the doctors found him participating in a marathon organised by the doctors on Saturday.

He then started introducing himself as a junior resident to seniors, and as an undergraduate student to juniors. "He made his way to the WhatsApp grpups of the doctors as well". When confronted, he could not produce any proof of identity and the doctors called the police and handed him over to the police.

Khurram has been booked under IPC sections 419 (impersonation) and 468 (forgery for goal of cheating) at Hauz Khas Police Station. He further said that since AIIMS had some 2,000 resident doctors at the campus, it was hard to keep track of all of them, a fact that Khurram seemed to have used to his advantage.
