Denmark's Michael Valgren took the honours in the first Ardennes classic of the year when he won the Amstel Gold Race in Valkenburg, Netherlands, today.

Valgren, who finished second at the 2016 Amstel Gold Race, made the key move of the race with just over two kilometres remaining, breaking clear of a select eight-man leading group.

Czech rider Roman Kreuziger, the victor in 2013, attacked in the final kilometers, but Valgren countered, passed his opponent and won. Italian Enrico Gasparotto, the victor in 2012 and 2016, finished third behind Valgren and Kreuziger.

The group included the likes of Movistar's Alejandro Valverde, Bora-Hansgrohe's recent Paris-Roubaix victor Peter Sagan, Julian Alaphilippe of Quick-Step, Tim Wellens of Lotto-Soudal and his team-mate Jakob Fuglsang. Alejandro Valverde became the number five in the race that wound through the hills of the southern Dutch province of Limburg.
