The bank said it remained committed to having the largest branch network among banks in Britain, where it operates around one in every five outlets.

The bank said that more than 900 new roles would be created as part of the plan.

The move follows a pattern of banks closing high street branches with customers moving to online services.

Lloyds Banking Group PLC said Tuesday it will close 49 branches and cut 305 branch jobs, in addition to some other central functions, as part of a previously announced restructuring programme.

It will be shutting down Halifax and Lloyds Bank branches, but - this time - the Bank of Scotland has survived the cut. "This will bring the total number of group mobile branches to 36 which will serve over 180 communities", the company said in a statement.

Lloyds adds that 90 per cent of the role reductions it has made since 2011 have been achieved through a combination of natural attrition, redeployment and voluntary redundancy.

Lloyds said the plan reflected changes in customer behaviour, with more people using digital services than branches, which are costly to maintain.

The group recently unveiled a 24% surge in bottom line profits to £5.3bn for 2017 and revealed it handed boss Antonio Horta-Osorio a £6.4m pay package, up 11% on 2016.
