A MA K-9 who was wounded in a shooting that killed his handler is back on his feet.

Louisa Rahilly, with Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists, where Nero is recovering, said the K-9 is starting to eat and that "the biggest struggle right now we're having medically is that he's having some arrhythmia in his heart that's just after a shock event".

Yarmouth police posted "K9 NERO CONTINUES TO FIGHT BACK!" on the department's Facebook page Monday morning.

"The change in the last 12 to 15 hours has been remarkable", said former Yarmouth K9 handler Peter McClellan Sunday.

YARMOUTH, Massachusetts (NBC Boston) - Funeral arrangements have been released for Yarmouth officer Sean Gannon, who was shot and killed Thursday while attempting to serve a warrant.

Gannon, 32, had been a Yarmouth police officer for eight years and had been working with Nero for about a year.

McClellan said that Gannon and Nero were great for each other personality-wise.

Nero's improvement is helping lift the spirits of both the police and the community as they mourn Gannon.

"After seeing Nero and his recovery and having just a few moments with him I walked out there better than when I walked in", Yarmouth Police Department Chief Fred Fredrickson said.
