Inmates killed in fight at SC prison

One of South Carolina's most unsafe prisons was secured early Monday after a "mass casualty incident" involving multiple inmates at several housing units, officials said.

According to South Carolina Department of Corrections, multiple crews responded to an incident on Sunday night that reportedly involved multiple inmate on inmate altercations.

The fights started around 7:15 p.m.in three housing units at Lee Correctional Institution, which houses some of the state's most violent and longest-serving offenders.

Of South Carolina's nine all-male, maximum-security prisons, Lee Correctional Institution is the largest. Mutual aid was received from Florence County EMS, Kershaw County EMS, Darlington County EMS, Lexington County EMS and Hartsville Rescue.

State police were called to one of South Carolina's most unsafe prisons Sunday night.

Another tweet said all responding officers are safe and accounted for.

"It's not a SC problem, it is a national problem", Stirling said.

Lee County Sheriff's Office also responded to the incident.

No other details are immediately available, but Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon confirmed deputies are assisting in the response. One inmate killed another in February this year.
