Irish country music legend Big Tom McBride dies aged 81

Tributes have poured in following the passing of much-loved country legend Big Tom McBride, with fellow singer Daniel O'Donnell describing McBride as "The King" of Irish country music.

Country music star Big Tom who has died at the age of 81.

"Dad passed away peacefully in the company of his family and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him".

Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon-Galway Eugene Murphy said: "It's with great sadness I learn of the death of Tom McBride, affectionately known as Big Tom".

Big Tom's career spanned 50 years on the Irish country music scene and he was inducted into the Irish Country Music Awards Hall of Fame in June 2016. "May he rest in peace", the statement continued.

The Monaghan man was taken to hospital in recent days and passed away early this morning.

He was best known for his hits Four Country Roads, Back to Castleblayney and The Old Rustic Bridge.
