Last month, publisher Simon & Schuster announced that the senator is writing "his most personal book in years". John McCain, who has has been undergoing treatment for a brain cancer diagnosis in his home state since late a year ago, is hospitalized in stable condition after undergoing surgery for an intestinal infection, his office said Monday.

Staff members for the 2008 GOP presidential candidate say the surgery was related to diverticulitis, a condition where the colon develops small bulges that can sometimes become infected.

"On Sunday, Senator McCain was admitted to Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, and underwent surgery to treat an intestinal infection related to diverticulitis".

"According to Mayo Clinic's website, "[diverticulitis] can cause severe abdominal pain, fever, nausea and a marked change in your bowel habits.

Doctors at the Mayo Clinic diagnosed McCain in July with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer that took the lives of Sen.

"Over the last few months, Senator McCain has been participating in physical therapy at his home in Cornville, Arizona, as he recovers from the side effects of cancer treatment", his office said. In fact, McCain, though a Republican, has been one of the most vocal Republican critics of Donald Trump. Most recently, he suggested that Trump's previous statements that the USA would cease military operations in Syria "emboldened" Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad's alleged chemical attacks against the city of Douma.

"The prognosis is very, very serious", McCain said at the time.

"My father @SenJohnMcCain is in stable condition - he continues to inspire me everyday with his intense grit and determination", daughter Meghan McCain said on Twitter.
