"We're announcing a new chapter in Ford Australia's commitment to motoring enthusiasts", Graeme Whickman, Ford Australia President and CEO, said.

Ford Australia president Graeme Whickman confirmed Drive's report yesterday that the iconic pony auto will hit racetracks next season with Tickford Racing and DJR Team Penske.

The move comes as part of the company's announcement that it will roll out the Ford Performance brand in Australia, the company once again embracing its heritage as a performance auto brand.

At the same time, Whickman confirmed when questioned about the rest of the Fiesta range that the brand wouldn't continue with the Fiesta, beyond the Fiesta ST. Whickman explained the company was simply too focused on the transition from manufacturing to a fully-imported line-up, and the job losses associated with that, to publicly fund an expensive racing program.

AT THE LAUNCH OF the Ford Performance brand in Australia today, Ford Australia confirmed it would bring the new Ford Fiesta ST to Australia in early 2019.

"We want to showcase our passion for performance and we want to bring performance you can use to more customers", he said. Supercars organizers on Tuesday confirmed that Ford will return to the sport in 2019 with a new race auto based on the Mustang (standard model pictured). "We know enthusiasts of the Mustang, Australia's most popular sports auto, will be as excited as we are about seeing Mustang on track". The race teams have already carried out months of initial work on ensuring the new auto fits the tightly-controlled Supercar chassis and roll cage.

Dick Johnson, co-owner of DJR Team Penske, also welcomed Ford's return.
