Kiermaier suffered the injury in the first inning against the Phillies on Sunday when he slid headfirst into second base.

The Tampa Bay Rays have placed Kevin Kiermaier on the 10-day disabled list due to a thumb injury. The center fielder was sliding into second base when it happened and could be seen immediately getting up and shaking his hand out after.

This marks the third consecutive year in which Kiermaier will miss extended time during the regular season.

UPDATE, 6:14: Kiermaier will have the surgery done Friday by Dr. Doug Carlan in St. Petersburg, the third surgery with him - right hamate bone in 2012, left wrist in 2016.

Kiermaier, much like the Rays (3-12), was struggling through the start of the season batting.163 with one RBI.

Kiermaier was undergoing an MRI this morning and the Rays should know more before tonight's game against Texas. Last season, he fractured his right hip sliding feet-first into first base and was sidelined for 61 games. Some combination of Johnny Field, Carlos Gomez, and Mallex Smith will cover center field between now and July, in all likelihood.

Right-handed pitcher Chih-Wei Hu was recalled from Triple-A Durham to fill Kiermaier's spot on the roster.

"It's beyond frustrating", Cash said after Sunday's game. KK going down doesn't help us get out of it. "There's a chance he's going to miss a chunk".
