Sam Darnold, Josh Allen to visit Giants this week

Buckle up, Giants fans. The countdown to the 2018 NFL Draft is here. Josh Allen of Wyoming arrives Tuesday afternoon and, one day after Darnold, does the dinner and meet-and-greet deal as well. The Giants already have had Josh Rosen and Baker Mayfield in for private visits.

Darnold is widely considered the top quarterback in the draft and, despite all sorts of chatter and noise, remains likely to be taken by the Browns with the No. 1 pick. Allen is the biggest quarterback with the strongest arm and is intriguing from a development standpoint. Just don't expect them to use a first-round pick on one.

The standard for making that pick is high, as general manager Dave Gettleman has said on more than one occasion that he must be able to envision the player wearing a gold jacket - i.e. being a Hall of Famer - to pick him.

The two visits pretty much will wrap up the pre-draft process for the Giants, leaving them a week to go back over their notes and observations and come to something of a consensus on what they will do with the most valuable draft pick they have had in nearly four decades. At least not according to Saints coach Sean Payton, who told the MMQB's Peter King that he does not envy the QB-needy teams picking at the top of the first round. The pressure to get a quarterback is so great in this league, I get that.

That's a rather pessimistic look at this year's crop of quarterback prospects. "I wouldn't be surprised if only one of these guys is left standing in four or five years, and if so, I'd guess it would be Sam Darnold".
