Chevrolet announced today that the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will handle pace auto duties at the 2018 Indy 500, which will be run on May 27 this year. After a Corvette Grand Sport led the pack last year, a Corvette ZR1 will lead this year. Not just any Corvette will do, so the new ZR1 has risen to the challenge. Next month, at the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500, the ZR1 will also hit the track as the race's official pace vehicle. "It's the flawless choice to pace 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing'".

No mention of Pace Car Replicas was mentioned, but we're guessing a few special ZR1's might be heading to dealers. "It's the ideal choice to pace 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing'". "Seeing all of the incredible Corvettes that have paced the Indianapolis 500 on track today is an exciting reminder of the rich history of this great relationship".

The Corvette ZR1 Pace Car can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.85 seconds and reach a top track speed of 212 miles per hour, the fastest Corvette in history.

For a very long time, the Indy 500 pace vehicle routinely shift from one company to another, but the last time that a non-General Motors product led the field was back in 1996 when a Dodge Viper was the official Indy pace auto. Arthur Chevrolet competed in the 1911 race, and Gaston Chevrolet won it in 1920.

Even at 212 miles per hour, the ZR1 is about 14 miles per hour off the pace of last year's fastest lap.

According to Indianapolis Motor Speedway president J. Douglas Boles, "Chevrolet and IMS enjoy one of the longest-running and strongest bonds in motorsports".

This year, the Indy 500 takes place on Sunday, May 27, with coverage beginning at 11 am Eastern.
