"Idlib is an important Syrian city, and we hope it will be liberated very soon with the determination of Syria and its fighters".

The White House said Wednesday that the administration had not finalized its decisions about a course of action in Syria.

Trump's U.N. ambassador, Nikki Haley, told the session that the president has made it clear that if Assad uses poison gas again, "the United States is locked and loaded".

Moscow's threat to down US missiles came from its ambassador to Lebanon, Alexander Zasypkin, who said he was referring to a statement by President Vladimir Putin and the Russian armed forces chief of staff.

The Russian army on Wednesday accused the White Helmets civil defense organization of staging a chemical weapons attack in Douma, where observers say more than 40 people died in a gas attack.

Trump was responding to a Russian warning on Tuesday that any us missiles fired at Syria over the assault on a rebel enclave would be shot down and the launch sites targeted. "Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!'", Trump wrote in a post on Twitter. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said there were no reports of USA losses in what he described as a heavy but carefully limited assault.

"Good souls will not be humiliated", Mr Assad tweeted, while hundreds of Syrians gathered in the capital of Damascus where they flashed victory signs and waved flags in scenes of defiance after the early morning barrage.

US Defence Secretary James Mattis, a retired Marine general, has been internally pushing Pentagon officials to become more observant of operational security, particularly in their conversations with the news media. "We're still working on this".

Earlier this year, the Times reported that Trump ordered Mueller's firing last June but "ultimately backed down" after White House counsel Donald F. McGahn II threatened to resign in protest. Russian Federation is Assad's most powerful ally and its devastating air power has helped him wrest back large areas of territory from rebels since 2015.

Western allies are considering intervening military action.

"As other nations step up their contributions, we look forward to the day when we can bring our warriors home", Trump said. We are totally predictable.

In another tweet, Trump called the Syrian leader a "gas killing animal".

In a U.S. military action a year ago in response to a sarin gas attack, the Pentagon said missiles took out almost 20 per cent of the Syrian air force.

Asked if he was referring to war between the United States and Russian Federation, he said: "We can not exclude any possibilities unfortunately".

In his next tweet the American president stated that American-Russian relations are now the worst in history and also suggested Russia should stop the arms race.

Britain would work with the USA and France to coordinate an global response, it added.

Trump's administration has sought to show toughness on Russian Federation, with a series of economic and diplomatic actions, including new sanctions last week against government officials and oligarchs. "Big price to pay", Trump warned in a tweet Sunday. USA action that could bring Americans into conflict with Russian and Iranian forces could have disastrous consequences.

Concern about the gravity of the potential strikes, to punish an alleged chemical weapons attack on Syrian civilians by President Bashar al-Assad's forces, escalated amid a US-Russia war of words on Wednesday.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday said France has proof that the Syrian government launched chlorine gas attacks and that France would not tolerate "regimes that think everything is permitted".

But British Prime Minister Theresa May said there was little doubt the Syrian government used a barrel bomb - large containers packed with fuel, explosives and scraps of metal - to deliver the chemicals at Douma.

The French president does not need parliamentary permission to launch a military operation.

The U.S. has about 2,000 troops on the ground in Syria as advisers to a makeshift group of anti-Islamic State fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces. Multiple IS terror attacks have targeted France, including one last month.
