A Red Cross employee was shot in an attack in the city of Taiz on Saturday morning, the International Committee of the Red Cross said in a statement.

"Unknown gunmen raided the auto of an ICRC team with a barrage of gunshots in the market of Dhabab in Taiz province, killing the team leader on the spot", the offical told Xinhua news agency. Other local sources revealed that the killed field officer was Lebanese.

It made the announcement on its twitter feed, and said it was trying to find out more information about the incident.

He said the attackers had fled the scene.

A Saudi-led military coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015, backing government forces fighting Iran-allied Houthi rebels.

The ongoing civil war has killed more than 10,000 Yemenis, mostly civilians, and displayed around 3 million others, according to United Nations aid agencies.

It wasn't immediately apparent how many people were in the vehicle and also when there were no casualties.
