On that day, many Colorado teachers - including up to 425 from Thompson - will participate in a walkout spearheaded by the Colorado Education Association, Teachers from several districts have planned to rally at the state capitol in Denver to push for more education funding.

Peoria Unified School District has 42 schools that could potentially be affected by a walkout.

"The lack of sufficient staff would impact the district's commitment to provide a productive learning environment and that is why we have made a decision to not have school for students on Friday, April 27", the district said on its website.

Brighton School District 27J called off classes for Friday, April 27. This includes preschools. It is always a hard decision to cancel school for students, but the safety and quality of learning experiences must remain our highest priorities. Normal school operations are scheduled to resume Monday, April 30.

We thank you for your continued partnership and unwavering support, which has contributed significantly to student achievement and success.

"As a district that has been leading conversations in Colorado regarding the need for more K-12 education funding, we understand and respect our teachers' passion for bringing awareness to this issue", the district said in a statement. Together with our excellent teachers and staff, our students will benefit from an exemplary education.

The Colorado Education Association estimates that Colorado teachers spend $656 of their own money for school supplies for students each year, and the average teacher salary here ranks 46th among US states and Washington, D.C., according to the National Education Association. There is a belief among these groups that years of low funding is having a significant impact on our ability to attract quality candidates into the teaching profession and is impeding the ability to effectively deliver the high level of educational experience our students deserve.

Extracurricular activities will be held as usual on Friday.

Thank you for your continued support of School District 11 and all of our schools. "We're committed to providing access to those resources for our families so we'll certainly have information built out on our site that details the community partners that are able and willing to help our families".
