Air NZ flight to Japan forced to return to Auckland

An Air New Zealand flight to Japan with 256 passengers has turned back to Auckland because of a problem in the cabin air system.

Flight radars show the plane circled a number of times off the coast of Northland.

NZ99 was headed to Tokyo Narita airport from Auckland when it needed to turn around due to an issue with the on-board air reticulation system.

Air New Zealand said the flight would be attended by engineers upon arrival and that engineering support would "easily correct the problem". "We sincerely apologise to customers for this inconvenience".

Repairs are expected to take several months because maintenance facilities are busy with other Dreamliner aircraft with the same engine fault.
