A Zoo Atlanta giraffe "died unexpectedly" this week, zoo officials have revealed.

The zoo detailed the Monday afternoon incident involving 8-year-old Zuberi in a Facebook post. Workers were in the enclosure with him caring for another giraffe when it happened.

Zoo officials say their Animal Care Team responded immediately, with the Veterinary Team and large-mammal animal care specialists on the scene, but Zuberi died very shortly thereafter.

"They saw some unusual movement in Zuberi's area and saw that he had a portion of his neck in a very small space in the metal railing", Dr. Jennifer Mickelberg said.

Hayley Murphy, DVM, Vice President of Animal Divisions, says the Zoo Atlanta family are shocked by the unexpected loss.

"Zuberi was an important part of the giraffe herd and a special individual. So it's really nothing unusual that would have occurred that would have led us to think something would happen", said Dr. Mickelberg.

Zuberi herd of adult males includes 12-year-old Abu and six year old Etana and Isooba.

The official cause of death will not be known until after the completion of a necropsy.

Zoo Atlanta said its "teams are thoroughly reviewing the entirety of the areas used by the giraffes", and offered information on other giraffes.

"Our Animal Care and Veterinary Teams responded to the emergency right away, but despite their immediate and heroic efforts, were not able to save Zuberi".
