After the hit, Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin skated over and exchanged words with Stralman.

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson was penalized three games in the second round of the National Hockey League playoffs for an illegal hit on the Pittsburgh Penguins Zach Aston-Reese, but on Tuesday night, Wilson found himself on the receiving end of a high hit from Tampa Bay's Anton Stralman. Wilson immediately fell to the ice and Stralman was assessed a boarding minor.

For better or for worse, Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson is an expert when it comes to knowing what the National Hockey League looks for when punishing someone for a risky hit, and he thinks Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Anton Stralman could be in trouble.

On the play, Wilson was facing the glass not too far from the Capitals' bench when Stralman hit him from behind. Wilson dropped to the ice and put his right glove to his helmet.

"I can tell you if it's maybe the other way around, you better believe they're looking at it and you better believe there might be a little bit more attention on it", he said.

He said the hit included "everything I've heard all year: He sees (jersey) numbers for a good amount of time, and he elevates through the back of my shoulder and head".

"When I looked at it, I thought numbers and launching yourself in, those are two things that are red flags", Trotz said. "It's an intense time of year", Wilson said. "I think a lot of people will say that". That's a lot of don'ts, for me, from what they've been telling me, that's a lot of don'ts.

Wilson was suspended three games in the Capitals' second-round series for an illegal check to the head of Penguins forward Zach Aston-Reese, a ruling with which he emphatically disagreed. We'll see. It's the playoffs. I don't think he's a malicious player at all. But it's a pretty unsafe hit. George Parros, the department's head, was at Capital One Arena on Tuesday night for Game 3, which Washington lost, 4-2. Wilson was slow to get up and went back to the locker room to be evaluated for an injury.

After the game, Wilson spoke to reporters about the hit and referenced his own history with the Player Safety. He returned to the rink four minutes of ice time later, but was still bothered after the game.
