Arsenal are seemingly set to sign young Freiburg defender Caglar Soyuncu.

Meanwhile, Gunners' new head of recruitment Sven Mislintat has made the Turkey worldwide his side's first major target when the transfer window opens. With Per Mertesacker retiring, Laurent Koscielny struggling with age and his ailing Achilles, and now out of action until December, and Shkodran Mustafi failing to build on his first season in North London, there is reason to claim that Arsenal require some spending at the position.

On the pitch, it was another disappointing season for the Gunners, who finished in sixth place in the Premier League standings, meaning that they will be without Champions League football for the second term running.

The 21-year-old has developed a reputation as one of Europe's brightest talents since moving to Germany from Turkish outfit Altinordu back in 2016 and made 28 appearances in all competitions for Freiburg, this campaign, helping them narrowly avoid relegation from the Bundesliga.

Soyuncu has been likened to Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels due to his possession style of football, and it is also believed that he will thrive should he decide to join the Gunners.

It adds that none of the managerial candidates interviewed for the vacant job were asked their opinion of Soyuncu.

The defender is reportedly a target for several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal.

"I've learnt a lot, especially tactically", Soyuncu said earlier this year, regarding his time at Freiburg so far. "That really excites me".

Arsenal are ready to spend £35m on signing Caglar Soyuncu.
