Leaving such wagering to the black market has cost states a potentially large source of tax revenue, according the National Conference of State Legislatures and other state groups. But he also said that if the state asked him to slow down on rolling out sports betting, he would.

But, for that to happen, each state will have to authorize it statutorily.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ruled in favor of New Jersey and lifted a federal ban on sports wagering. The new CT law allows state officials "to regulate wagering on sporting events to the extent permitted by state and federal law".

Southern Baptist leaders warned there would be harmful consequences from legalized sports gambling. Are there more vexing issues we have to face than sports betting?

That ruling strikes down a federal ban in place since 1992 that restricts sports betting for most states.

The high ruling in Murphy v. NCAA reversed a decision from the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, concluding that the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act violated the Constitution's anti-commandeering principle. AGA President Geoff Freeman described the high court's opinion as "a victory for the millions of Americans who seek to bet on sports in a safe and regulated manner". "And this is true under either our interpretation or that advocated by respondents and the United States", wrote Justice Alito. Associate Justice Stephen Breyer joined in most of the majority opinion but also signed onto the dissent with Associate Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor.
