The league announced the three finalists for rookie of the year, a group that includes Tatum along with Donovan Mitchell of Utah and Ben Simmons of Philadelphia.

Stevens was one of three nominated for Coach of the Year - along with fired Raptors coach Dwane Casey and Utah's Quin Snyder.

Brad Stevens and Jayson Tatum may not win their respective year-end awards, but they were still honored on Wednesday as finalists.

But an injury five minutes into the first game ended Gordon Hayward's season, moving Tatum up a notch on the team's pecking order.

Stevens certainly made his case for this year's award, navigating the Celtics to a 55-win season and the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference despite losing a pair of star players during the season.

Tatum was expected to be a role player who would spend a good chunk of this season learning the National Basketball Association game from teammates Jaylen Brown and Gordon Hayward.

Simmons finished the 2017-18 season averaging 15.8 points, 8.1 assists, and 8.2 rebounds per game. Celtics forward Al Horford is a disappointing omission from that category.
