Several centre-back's have been linked with United in recent months but Bonucci has emerged as a potential target and it looks like Mourinho has stepped-up his interest in the Milan star.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly contacted AC Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci over a potential summer move for the Italian.

The Red Devils boss is understood to be in the market for a new centre-back to bolster his squad ahead of a likely Premier League title challenge next season.

Tuttosport reports that Mourinho has identified Bonucci as a target to solve his defensive issues and has made contact with the 31-year-old about joining Old Trafford.

AC Milan signed the Italy worldwide from Juventus last July for €42 million (£37m) but the Serie A club would be open to a transfer this summer.

It is claimed that Milan are prepared to let him leave in a season long loan deal, with an obligation to buy for around £35 million.

Bonucci has 77 caps for Italy.

After a huge spending spree last summer in which they lavished around £200million, Milan, who will miss out on Champions League football next season, need to sell in order to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

But the Italian defender snubbed a switch to England and joined AC Milan in a surprise deal.
