"I spoke to Dan Carter a few months ago and he was saying about the New Zealand rugby team and when he was there how he had to look after Beauden Barrett", Giggs told WalesOnline.

The All Blacks have dominated rugby union over the last decade, winning two World Cups and have topped the world rankings since 2009.

Wales will be without Joe Allen and Gareth Bale for their friendly against Mexico in the United States on 29 May.

"I shouldn't say this but yeah I hope so", he joked when asked if he wanted Bale to win the Champions League.

As unlikely as it sounds, Dan Carter's selfless mentorship of Beauden Barrett in the All Blacks could help pave the way for the rise of Wales as an global football force. I thought it was fantastic that if he didn't, he would have got hammered from the All Blacks media, the fans, and that's just part and parcel of why the All Blacks are so great.

Wales coach Ryan Giggs is backing Real Madrid to beat Liverpool in the Champions League final next week. "Even though that player is after his place, he still has to guide him and help him along".

"It's very exciting and it gives them (young players) a great chance. But I also want players to experience Champions League finals", said the manager.

"Dan had a pretty good career himself and he said it made him a better player and kept him sharp", added Giggs. "But [he] knew he had someone biting at his ankles and wanting to take his place".
