Southampton are entering new contract talks with manager Mark Hughes.

Hughes has said he would relish the chance to extend his stay with the club after fulfilling his aim of keeping Southampton up.

Hughes was appointed as Mauricio Pellegrino's successor in March with the Saints one point and one place above the relegation zone.

The overriding sense among the Southampton hierarchy, though, is that Hughes and his staff, Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki, have done an outstanding job and that the feel-good factor they have inspired can now be used as a springboard going into next season.

In an interview today with The Telegraph, Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger said that Hughes, Bowen and Niedzwiecki had been the "perfect" fit at a moment of crisis. "They did an wonderful job", he said.

"The decision to go with Mark in the timeframe that we had to meet him and to bring him in was very tight, but everything since they've been here has been natural and the fit has been ideal", he told Britain's Press Association.

"I think we also have to get back to the Southampton way of having a locker room full of players that want to be here, whatever that ambition is", Krueger said.
