Verlander, the 2011 American League MVP and Cy Young victor, recorded his 2,500th career strikeout against Ohtani in the ninth as he threw his first shutout in three years - a five-hitter - with a dominant 118-pitch, seven-strikeout outing that the Astros won 2-0. He walked one and lowered his ERA from 1.21 to 1.05. Two runners were on when he retired Zack Cozart on an infield popup to polish off his eighth major league shutout and first since 2015 with the Tigers. Gattis has three home runs in his last five games.

Trout went 0 for 4.

Pujols singled to right-center with two outs and Verlander walked Andrelton Simmons before retiring Cozart.

"Verlander, when he smells the end of a game, that's when he really turns it up", Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

The pitcher threw his first shutout in three years on Wednesday night, allowing just five hits for the Astros who snapped a modest two-game losing skid. He struck out four, and both runs off him were unearned. Cozart had to react quickly and backhand it, which resulted in an off-balance throw into the dirt. And he's been doing some things you would never expect from a pitcher at the plate in this era.

If this were the first time you ever saw Ohtani swing the bat, you'd think he was your normal National League pitcher in the obligatory position of doing his best to not look foolish. Kemp went 1 for 3 while playing left field and batting ninth.

The current record over the past century belongs to Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, who posted a 1.12 ERA over 34 starts in 1968. Morton has allowed one run or fewer in five of his eight starts. Skaggs has not won at home this season, going 0-2 with a 5.31 ERA in four starts.
