Policemen were said to be conducting searches on the residence of former Prime Minister Najib Razak in Taman Duta and a high-end condo in Pavilion Residences in Bukit Bintang tonight.

A police truck packed with big, blue boxes left the compound of the house on Thursday afternoon, a Reuters witness said.

Najib's lawyer Datuk Harpal Singh Grewal told reporters early Thursday that several personal items such as handbags, clothes and gifts were removed from the house.

Last week, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he expected charges to be filed against Najib following investigations over the removal of hundreds of millions of United States dollars from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fund.

Amar Singh said searches were continuing at two apartments owned by Najib's family, his office at the Prime Minister's Department, and at the prime minister's official residence which Najib had used during two terms as prime minister from 2009.

"Can open, is not hard, we manufactured it", said Lion's manager, Tan See Chong, in a text message confirming the men work at the firm.

Amar is expected to hold a press conference shortly, to confirm earlier reports of the raid.

"The search conducted in the premises and the items seized thus far would seem of insignificant value, and the continued presence of police officers in his residence and the drilling of the old safe strongly suggests unwarranted harassment causing Dato Seri Najib's family members, staff and others in the residence mental distress and anguish and casts a bad image of my client", said the lawyer.

On Wednesday, Mahathir said the Government would make arrests as soon as there is clear evidence and reiterated that there would be "no deal" for Najib in the scandal.

He said the items were believed to have been taken for the objective of investigation under the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001.

A man who claimed to be a neighbour of Najib was stopped by the police as he approached the house at 11.20am. Yesterday, a summary of the Auditor-General's 2016 investigation of 1MDB was made public, giving details of mismanagement and financial transactions carried out without instructions from the board of directors.
