Sadiq Khan launches scheme to build 10000 new homes in London

Throughout recent months, Mr Khan has shown concern over the building limitations that London councils face, when trying to replace the homes that were sold under Right to Buy.

"We are doing all we can to reduce the effect the housing crisis has on families and individuals, but we need the Government to do more to help us build the homes that London so desperately needs". His programme offers councils an innovative way to ringfence their Right to Buy receipts to help them build new homes to replace those sold in the local area.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said, "I grew up on a council estate and I know first-hand the vital role social housing plays in London".

A spokesperson for City Hall said officials met yesterday to discuss introducing the move across parts of the city's 32 boroughs this year - some car-free days already exist for events such as the London Marathon and Pride events.

Many council houses were built in the 1970s but since then, the rate of building has slowed down.

"But the government has turned its back on local authorities, severely hampering their ambition to build by cutting funding and imposing arbitrary restrictions on borrowing".

Building Council Homes for Londoners will support councils to enhance their capacity to deliver large-scale new-build programmes with skills, expertise and resources from City Hall.

Mt Khan has called the government up on their failure to replace social housing lost under Right to Buy and hopes London councils will be granted with higher powers to replace as many homes as possible.
