When Fox didn't include Gambit on their future X-Men installments list at CinemaCon last month, fueling rumors that Channing Tatum's long-gestating passion project was dead, producer Simon Kinberg came to the rescue and assured fans that the Ragin' Cajun's solo movie was still alive and kicking.

The Gambit movie can't seem to catch a break. Once all of that is ready, the film could begin shooting as early as the end of this summer.

The gatekeepers of 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise have spent the better part of the past decade repeatedly threatening to make a solo Gambit movie, but time and again the project has failed to make it across the starting line.

"We have a script that we love - that Channing loves", he said. "We've met with a bunch of directors in the last couple of weeks, and we're hoping to actually pick one in the next couple of weeks and shoot the movie maybe the end of this summer". If filming actually starts this summer a lot of people will be surprised, though pleasantly so I'd imagine. At various points, three different directors have been announced for a hopeful film - Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski - with each reportedly leaving due to creative differences.

Gambit is now slated to arrive in theaters on June 7, 2019.

As he mentioned, this film has yet to choose a director, despite having a release date of June 7, 2019.

Still, the fact that Gambit is even still an active concern at all means that there's a lot of will behind making the movie happen. I'm not saying Gambit is the next Deadpool, but it certainly wouldn't be so bad if it was.
