Syrian government forces seize last rebel enclave in Homs

The government has yet to formally announce the recapture of the enclave, but a Syrian military officer told Syrian TV the government is now in control of the last rebel enclave in Homs after "overpowering terrorism".

The rebels had agreed to surrender the northern countryside of Homs province to the government under a deal reached in early May. "Starting today, northern rural Homs will begin to return to normal life".

According to the deal, thousands of rebels and civilians who refused to live under government control would be evacuated to other rebel-held areas in the country's north.

The Syrian government on Tuesday airdropped leaflets on the southern province of Daraa calling on rebels and civilians in the area to surrender to government forces, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

Units from the Syrian Army and other government forces have been looking to build on their impressive territorial gains in Damascus' East Ghouta region, via operation Damascus Steel, and are continuing to oust Daesh* terrorists from their remaining positions in south Damascus.

A Syrian security officer told state-run Al-Ikhbariya TV police began deploying in northern rural Homs, restoring government control.

Videos shared on social media showed vehicles carrying the Russian flag accompanying the deployment.

Syrian police entered a rebel pocket between the cities of Homs and Hama on Tuesday as the last batch of opposition fighters and their families readied to evacuate the area, the SOHR reported.

"The courageous armed forces, with support from allies, have completed the clearing of 1,200 sq.km (463 sq. miles) in rural Northern Homs and Southern Hama, and have restored security to 65 villages and towns", said Brig.

A small pocket in southern Homs province, near the border with Iraq, is controlled by US -backed rebels.

The UK-based observatory said that some 34,500 people, militants and their families, left the area as part of the deal.

A group of USA -backed rebels have a base in southern Homs near the border with Iraq.
