The announcement was made via The Memorial's official Twitter page on Wednesday.

Woods has never competed in the Memphis-based St. Jude Classic, played a week before the US Open, the May 31-June 3 Memorial is expected to be his final stop ahead of the year's second major. Jack Nicklaus annually hosts the tournament on the course he designed and built.

Woods, a five-time victor of The Memorial, has performed admirably since his return to golf this season and has posted four top-12 finishes in his last six starts on the PGA Tour.

Woods finished strongly at The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach last weekend, posting a seven-under 65 in the third round before closing with a three-under 69 to finish seven shots adrift of tournament victor Webb Simpson.

In his last six starts, Woods has recorded four top-12 finishes. Woods and Thomas join a stacked gathering that includes Masters champion Patrick Reed, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Bubba Watson and defending champion Jason Dufner.

The former world number one won this tournament three years running from 1999 and then again in 2009 and 2012.

Woods, who is coming off of a strong weekend at The Players Championship, including a third-round 65 at TPC Sawgrass, said after the tournament, "I'm not that far off from winning". It will nearly certainly be his final tournament before the U.S. Open June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills.

"It was just a matter of time, and this weekend was it", Woods said.
