Bartolo Colon Is Hit In Belly By Live Drive, Has Priceless Reaction

Bartolo Colon took a brutal comeback line drive straight to the gut on Wednesday night, but was able to recover and still make the out at first.

No, the sharply hit ball up the middle that bounced off Bartolo Colon hardly deterred the veteran pitcher from picking it up and throwing the runner out at first. With that kind of shock absorption, a big belly might just be the key to winning a Gold Glove award.

Colon put together arguably his best performance of the season on Wednesday, allowing four hits in 7 2/3 shutout innings and giving the Rangers a 5-1 win over the Mariners. "So far this year, he's been the Rangers" best pitcher, back in April, he took a ideal game into the eighth inning on the road in Houston against the defending World Series champions. Colon struck out two and threw 71 of 96 pitches for strikes. "We got crossed up and it ended up getting by him and cost us two runs", Rzepczynski said.

Kyle Seager homered in the ninth.

The highlight was just part of Colon's fine performance against the Mariners.

Christian Bergman scattered two hits over seven shutout frames in a no-decision Wednesday against the Rangers.

James Pazos (1-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up two hits opening the eighth. He is out of minor league options. Servais expects it will be a few days before Cruz is back in the lineup but didn't believe a DL stint was needed. In his 21st MLB season, Colon also lowered his ERA to 2.82, good for 10th-best among qualified American League pitchers (per MLB.com's Andrew Simon).

Mariners: LHP Marco Gonzales (3-3) makes his ninth start of the season as the Mariners open a series against Detroit.
