An 11-year-old girl in NY, who was helping her mother unpack their auto during a powerful storm, was killed when a tree snapped and fell onto their vehicle.

The vicious storm left hundreds of thousands without power across New York, New Jersey and CT. The girl and her mother had arrived home on Robinson Avenue in Newburgh at about 4:15 p.m. and were unloading the auto when police say the wind caused a large tree to topple onto the vehicle. "I think there are going to be a lot of people without power for days". Officials in that city had every road closed because of downed trees, power lines and debris.

Several lightning strikes led to structure fires in New Jersey and MA.

The National Weather Service has gotten more than 100 severe storm reports, including baseball-sized hail and wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service is investigating whether any tornadoes occurred Tuesday. But there were no reports of damage from the abnormally high tides reported in areas from Perth Amboy in New Jersey to Delaware's Fenwick Island.

Airlines also canceled and delayed flights in and out of the region.

Travel delays were reported, including several suspensions at New York's Grand Central Terminal.
